Counseling Theory

Course Description:

This course provides an intensive look at selected theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Theoretical and empirical foundations of individual, relational, & systemic approaches are examined. Students are encouraged to begin to define their own theoretical approach to their work with individuals, couples, & families.

Rational:

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the major counseling theories and practices and provide an opportunity for the students to apply these theories to their own personal life and other case study material. Emphasis will be placed upon enabling students to develop theoretical foundation upon which to base a counseling approach and to critique this approach against counseling standards.

Exams

This class will be exploring six different thories that are being used in the counseling world. You will receive six chapters that you will need to download from this page. Please read each chapter then take the attached Exam for the chapter. You will need to e-mail me your Exam after you have completed it. You will need to save the file before you take the quiz. Open the saved exam and click on the ENABLE EDITING. You can answer the exam by filling in the circle once you enable your document. If you are unable to fill in the circle you can simply put your answer in BOLD. This exam is an open-book exam. Please use the following heading when submitting you exams:

Of cousres, your exam number will change depending on your exam. Please use your real first and last name.

Research Paper:

You will pick one of the six theories we covered in class and write a 3-5 page paper using 12pt Times New Roman Black Font doubled spaced. The paper should explain in clear language the main points and or ideas that create the theory you decide to research. The paper will also cover the stregnths and weaknesses for the theory you chose. You must have two sources (The textbook can be one of your sources) and your paper must be aligned with APA formatting standards. The paper must have a cover page. This paper is to be e-mailed to me by Sunday, April 8.
